Choosing between channel posts and direct messages

Last reviewed Sep 6, 2026

When setting up Slack routing, each event type can go to a shared channel or as a direct message to the specific person it concerns.

When to use a channel

Events worth broadcasting to the team

Use a channel for events the whole team benefits from seeing, such as new Scan findings or general campaign activity.

When to use a direct message

Use a direct message for something personally actionable, such as an approval request or a failed requirement assigned specifically to one person, so it doesn't get lost in general channel traffic.
