Product marketing

The discipline responsible for positioning and messaging a product, understanding its market and competitive landscape, and enabling sales and marketing teams with the language and materials needed to sell it effectively.

The discipline responsible for positioning and messaging a product, understanding its market and competitive landscape, and enabling sales and marketing teams with the language and materials needed to sell it effectively.

Why it matters

Product marketing sits at the intersection of product, sales, and marketing — without it, a genuinely good product can still struggle commercially if nobody has clearly defined who it's for, why it matters, and how it should be talked about consistently across every customer-facing team.

In a sentence

"Product marketing owns the messaging framework and competitive positioning, while the broader marketing team executes campaigns built on top of that foundation."
  • Often confused with: Product management (product marketing focuses on positioning, messaging, and go-to-market; product management focuses on defining and building the product itself — the two disciplines work closely together but own distinct responsibilities).
  • Synonyms: PMM (shorthand for the role, product marketing manager).
