GMV (Gross Merchandise Value)

The total dollar value of goods sold through a platform over a given period, before deducting fees, returns, or discounts. Common in e-commerce and marketplace businesses.

The total dollar value of goods sold through a platform over a given period, before deducting fees, returns, or discounts. Common in e-commerce and marketplace businesses.

Why it matters

GMV is the standard scale metric for marketplaces and e-commerce platforms that don't take full ownership of the goods sold — it reflects total commerce flowing through the platform, which investors and operators use to gauge market share and growth, even though it isn't the same as the company's own revenue.

In a sentence

"GMV crossed $500M this year, though the company's actual take-rate revenue is a much smaller fraction of that number."
  • Antonyms: Net revenue.
  • Often confused with: GBV (see above); also sometimes confused with a company's own reported revenue, which for a marketplace is typically just its commission or fee on GMV, not the full GMV figure.
  • Synonyms: Gross sales volume (in some retail contexts).
