Creative brief

A document outlining the objective, audience, key message, constraints, and desired outcome for a piece of creative work, given to a designer, writer, or agency before work begins.

A document outlining the objective, audience, key message, constraints, and desired outcome for a piece of creative work, given to a designer, writer, or agency before work begins.

Why it matters

A clear creative brief prevents wasted effort and misaligned expectations — creative work produced without a shared understanding of the goal and audience often has to be redone, not because the execution was poor, but because it was solving the wrong problem from the start.

In a sentence

"The first round of concepts missed the mark because the creative brief didn't clearly specify the primary audience — we tightened that before the next round."
  • Often confused with: Mood board (a creative brief is a written strategic document defining the goal and parameters of the work; a mood board is a visual reference tool used to establish aesthetic direction, often created alongside or after a brief).
  • Synonyms: Creative direction brief.
