Modern & AI-Era Marketing Terms

AI agent (marketing context)
An AI system capable of autonomously performing a sequence of tasks toward a defined goal — such as researching a topic, drafting content, and checking it against brand guidelines — with limited or no step-by-step human direction at each individual step, as distinct from a single-prompt AI tool that produces one output per request.
AI overview / AI-generated summary
A summary generated directly by a search engine's AI system in response to a query, displayed prominently at the top of search results, synthesizing information from multiple sources into a single generated answer rather than linking to them individually.
AI slop
An informal, critical term for low-quality, generic, or formulaic content produced by AI tools with little human oversight, review, or genuine insight added — content that's technically coherent but adds little real value.
Answer engine
A search or AI tool that provides a direct answer to a query — through a generated summary or conversational response — rather than a traditional list of ranked links for the user to click through and evaluate themselves.
Brand safety
The practice of ensuring a brand's advertising doesn't appear alongside content that could damage its reputation — such as misinformation, graphic violence, or extremist material — typically managed through platform controls, keyword blocklists, and content category exclusions.
Citability
The degree to which a piece of content is structured — clear, self-contained, well-defined passages — in a way that makes it easy for an AI answer engine or search summary to accurately extract and cite as a source.
Composable martech
An approach to building a marketing technology stack from modular, best-of-breed individual tools connected via APIs, rather than relying on a single, all-in-one platform that handles every function within one vendor's ecosystem.
Content velocity
The rate at which a team or organization produces and publishes marketing content over a given period, often increased substantially by AI-assisted drafting tools.
Hallucination (AI)
An instance where an AI tool generates false, fabricated, or unsupported information presented confidently as fact — a statistic that doesn't exist, a quote never actually said, a source that was never real.
Human-in-the-loop
A workflow design principle where AI-generated output is never published or acted on without a human reviewing, editing, or approving it first, as opposed to a fully automated process with no human checkpoint.
Marketing orchestration
The coordination of marketing activities, tools, data, and workflows across multiple channels and systems into a single, unified, and consistently managed process, rather than each channel or tool operating independently.
Martech stack
A martech (marketing technology) stack is the full set of tools a marketing team uses to plan, execute, and measure campaigns — typically including analytics, ad platforms, a CMS, email, a CRM, and increasingly design, commerce, and AI-assisted content tools.
Prompt
The instruction or input given to an AI tool to generate a specific output — text, an image, code — with the quality and specificity of the prompt significantly affecting the quality of the result.
Prompt engineering
The practice of deliberately crafting, structuring, and refining prompts given to an AI tool to reliably produce higher-quality, more specific, or more consistent output.
Synthetic content
Content — text, images, audio, or video — generated or significantly altered by AI, as distinct from content created directly by a human.
Zero-click search
A search where the user gets the information they need directly from the search results page itself — through a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, or an AI-generated summary — without clicking through to any website.
