Acronyms & Performance Metrics

Activation rate

The percentage of new signups or trial users who complete a specific early action considered to indicate they've experienced the product's core value — sometimes called the "aha moment."

The percentage of new signups or trial users who complete a specific early action considered to indicate they've experienced the product's core value — sometimes called the "aha moment."

Why it matters

A high signup volume with a low activation rate usually means the acquisition motion is working but onboarding isn't — people are arriving but not getting far enough to see why the product matters, which is a very different (and often more fixable) problem than a traffic problem.

In a sentence

"We redefined our activation event from 'created an account' to 'completed a first scan,' since that's the point people actually see the product work."
  • Antonyms: Churn (activation measures early success; churn measures later abandonment — related but describing opposite ends of the lifecycle).
  • Often confused with: Onboarding completion (activation is specifically tied to a defined value-realization moment; onboarding completion can refer more generally to finishing a setup flow, whether or not real value was demonstrated in the process).
